The Star Rover, a Modern Library Classic by Jack London, follows the narrative of San Quentin death-row inmate Darrell Standing as he escapes the harsh reality of prison through vivid dreams. These dreams transport him to past lives where he experiences existence as a French nobleman and an Englishman in medieval Korea. Based on the life and imprisonment of Jack London’s friend Ed Morrell, this novel is one of the author’s most complex and original works. Lorenzo Carcaterra’s introduction highlights the narrative’s energy and force, seamlessly navigating between the brutal realities of prison life and the dreamscapes of beauty.
