The Aesthetic Animal, authored by Henrik Hogh-Olesen and published by Oxford University Press on August 17, 2018, delves into the profound question of why humans adorn themselves, embellish their surroundings, and create art, music, song, dance, and fiction. This illustrated edition explores how these seemingly trivial activities are deeply rooted in human nature, serving crucial biological functions.

Through a lively and engaging narrative, Hogh-Olesen presents an original synthesis of empirical data from archaeology, cave art, anthropology, biology, ethology, behavioral- and evolutionary psychology, and neuro-aesthetics. The book covers a wide array of aesthetic behaviors, including cave art, graffiti, tattoos, piercings, fashion, design, music, song, and dance. It argues that the aesthetic impulse is not just a frivolous pastime but a fundamental part of human nature, guiding us towards what is biologically good for us.

The book highlights how aesthetically skilled individuals can gain mating advantages, higher status, and more collaborative opportunities. With beautiful color illustrations that complement the text, The Aesthetic Animal is an essential read for those interested in biology, psychology, anthropology, architecture, design, fashion, body culture, art, and the evolution of aesthetics.
