Motivational Interviewing: Helping People Change, 3rd Edition is the authoritative presentation of a powerful clinical method for facilitating positive behavioral change. Developed by William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick, this classic work has been significantly revised and reorganized to reflect over 30 years of research and clinical practice. The book introduces the “four processes” of motivational interviewing—engaging, focusing, evoking, and planning—providing a clear framework for navigating the journey toward change.

The text explores the fundamental “spirit” of motivational interviewing, emphasizing partnership, acceptance, compassion, and evocation. It offers practical, step-by-step guidance on how to identify and respond to a client’s “change talk” while effectively handling ambivalence. Rich with illustrative clinical examples, this edition serves as an essential resource for professionals in health care, psychology, counseling, social work, and substance abuse treatment who seek to strengthen an individual’s own motivation and commitment to change.
