An Introduction to Behavioral Endocrinology

The fifth edition of An Introduction to Behavioral Endocrinology provides a comprehensive and updated exploration of the complex interactions between hormones, the brain, and behavior. Maintaining its reputation as a leading text in the field, this edition continues to emphasize a comparative approach, examining the endocrine mechanisms evolved by both human and nonhuman animals to address fundamental challenges in survival and reproduction.

Co-authored by Randy J. Nelson and Lance Kriegsfeld, the text traces the historical development of the field, linking foundational theories to modern hypotheses. The content is structured around a central conceptual theme: hormones influence behavior by acting on three primary biological components—sensory input mechanisms, central nervous system processing (including its development and structure), and effector output mechanisms. While incorporating advanced molecular and cellular research, the book is designed to remain highly accessible to students from both biological and non-biological science backgrounds.
