Set in 19th century Australia, Seven Little Australians recounts the adventures and misadventures of the Woolcot family. After losing his wife at a young age, Captain Woolcot remarries to care for his six children. His second marriage produces an additional child, bringing the family to seven lively siblings under one roof. Despite trying to maintain strict discipline with military-like rules, the children, led by their spirited leader Judy, constantly find ways to rebel and bring joy to their home.
The story takes a somber turn when Captain Woolcot sentences his beloved daughter Judy to boarding school. As evening falls, Judy’s stepsister Esther visits her bedside, offering words of consolation and heartfelt concern for her sister’s future. Despite the captain’s firm stance, Esther pleads for mercy on Judy’s behalf, emphasizing the deep bond between them and hoping for a change in their father’s decision.
Through this tale, Ethel Turner captures the essence of family love, resilience, and the enduring spirit of childhood despite challenging circumstances.
