Description

Le Malade Imaginaire: Molière (French Edition) presents the works of Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, known as Molière, a French playwright, actor, and theater director who flourished during the early reign of Louis XIV. Born in Paris on January 15, 1622, and passing away there on February 17, 1673, Molière is renowned for his masterful comedies that reflect the social norms and hypocrisies of the time. Issued by a family from the lower bourgeoisie (his father held the position of “tapissier du Roi”), young Jean-Baptiste dedicated himself to theater at the age of 21, co-founding “l’Illustre Théâtre” with Madeleine and Joseph Béjart. After financial difficulties forced a split from his troupe in 1645, he traveled across various provinces until 1658, composing early farces such as “L’Étourdi” and “Le Dépit amoureux.” Returning to Paris in 1658 under the patronage of the king’s brother, Molière’s troupe adopted the name “Troupe de Monsieur,” performing plays including those by Pierre Corneille. However, it was with his works like “Les Précieuses ridicules” (November 1659) and particularly “Le Malade Imaginaire” that he truly established his career as a playwright. The latter delves into the story of Orgon, whose life is disrupted by the manipulative and falsely devout Tartuffe, leading to a gradual erosion of familial harmony and trust.
